History: Makaza was born with a gimp leg. Because conditions originating from conception to birth are resistant to magic-based healing, no amount of medicine and incantations could cure him. Despite that he was his father's only son, his condition proclaimed him unfit to take his place as the family heir or any other position of importance according to the traditions of his tribe. His father prayed daily for the gods to give him his true son, the one the medicine man Salihu prophecied would be the returned wind god Erion, but after Makaza, his mother only gave birth to girls. Scornful of a world in which he was worth so little, Makaza left his tribe when he reached adulthood at the age of fourteen and traveled to the city of Halsteinn.

The city overwhelmed him. Never had he imagined so much could exist in so little space or that artificially made creations could be built to perform tasks he'd thought only humans could do. It wasn't long before he discovered his own knack for making practically every machine he came in contact with malfunction, from airships to coffeemakers. But he didn't let that hold him back. Desperately desiring to go to school but finding that he didn't have the money or the connections, he sought to apprentice under a Solarian gem merchant named Orello whom he met in one of the city's marketplaces. At first Orello wasn't thrilled about this idea, especially with Makaza's handicap and background as a tribesman, but Makaza worked relentlessly for him without pay to prove that he could and would do what it took to reach his goal, and eventually Orello caved.

With the well-paying job as a merchant's apprentice, Makaza put himself through the Youth Institute, and what he couldn't pay, Orello made up for out of growing affection for the young man and sheer amusement at the idea of an adult attending school with five-year-olds. Upon Orello's death after a long illness, he left his business to Makaza, by then a skilled businessman in the middle of his education at the Magics Academy for Elements. After graduating, he began his travels all over Amarantha, becoming well-known for his daring expeditions across the deserts in the worst windy seasons when no other merchants dared to venture outside city walls. He travels only with Reyngard, his hired mechanic, but has many contacts in all four cities and some on the outskirts in the edge towns.

His constant journeying between cities is also the perfect means by which to search for a select group of eight other individuals. Believing that his father was wrong and that he is, in fact, Erion the God of Wind, he decided to take it upon himself to hunt down the remaining Nine in order to fulfill their prophecied healing of the world. So even though he's abandoned his tribal life, he's not completely forsaken his origins.

Personality: Makaza is generally very laid back and friendly. It takes a lot to get him angry or even wipe the smile off his face, which tends to annoy some people, especially business associates who would enjoy seeing him a little pissed off. He does get nervous around machinery. As much as he loves technology, it certainly doesn't seem to love him back, and things tend to short-circuit and fizzle when he gets too close. This causes him to spaz just a little, breaking his normally cool, collected countenance and making him pout and/or giggle like an idiot--which he will, of course, deny later. On a level pertaining to self-development, he becomes extremely serious. He trains in the arts of wind magic almost obsessively in hopes of returning to his tribe one day and proving to his father that he isn't worthless.

Appearance: Despite his handicap, Makaza has a muscular build due to his diligent work as a merchant and obsessive wind magic training. He's broad-shouldered and tall with long brown hair, blue eyes and comely features, and he's covered in exotic tribal tattoos from his desert-dwelling days. So it's no wonder that he doesn't make it through any of his visits to the cities without being noticed by men and women alike. This may also have something to do with the way he dresses, because even though he doesn't dress like high society, he does dress well enough that it's impossible to miss that he's someone with money. Regardless of what it is about him that allures people, few in the cities seem to care that he's crippled and always hobbling around with his wooden cane.
